How BESS pricing works in India

Why two quotes for the same battery can differ by a wide margin, and how to read a BESS price before you compare it with another one.

Maintained alongside the supplied Calyco Energy market database. Source-level verification is in progress; company-specific comparisons remain unpublished.

Most BESS price comparisons fail before they start

A battery energy storage system is not a single product, so a price per kWh is not a single measurement. The same 4 MWh battery can be quoted as bare cells, as a containerised DC block, as an AC system with conversion and protection, or as a fully installed plant with a performance guarantee. Each of those is a legitimate price for a different scope of supply.

On top of scope, three measurement choices change the number without changing the hardware: whether the price is stated on an AC or DC basis, whether the capacity is nominal or usable, and whether GST is included. A comparison that does not hold all three constant is not a comparison.

This is why every record in the Calyco benchmark database stores its scope, its price unit, its measurement basis and its tax treatment as mandatory fields. A record missing any of them cannot be published.

The scope ladder

Costs accumulate in a predictable order: cells, then modules and racks, then a DC block, then a container with cooling and fire safety, then power conversion and controls, then transformer and switchgear, then installation and commissioning, and finally long-term service.

Reading a price without knowing where it sits on that ladder is the most common source of error in BESS procurement. A DC container price that looks attractive against an AC BESS price is usually not cheaper — it is buying less.

Equipment prices and service tariffs are different measurements

Equipment is bought per kWh of capacity. Capacity as a service — BOO, BOOT or a storage purchase agreement — is contracted per MW per month, or per MWh delivered, because what is being bought is availability over time rather than hardware.

These units cannot share an axis on a chart or a column in a table. The pricing page keeps them in separate panels for exactly this reason: a service tariff and an equipment price are not larger and smaller versions of the same quantity.

Where economies of scale actually come from

Cell cost is close to linear in energy. Almost everything else is not. Enclosure engineering, thermal management, fire safety, controls, protection and HV equipment are substantially fixed for a given block, and grid interconnection is fixed for a given connection point.

That is why price per kWh falls with system size while total project cost rises, and why the effect is stronger at the installed-plant level than at the equipment level.

Duration behaves in the opposite direction on a per-kW basis: adding hours of storage spreads conversion cost across more energy, lowering price per kWh while raising price per kW.

What is specific to Indian projects

Connection voltage and the utility's protection requirements set the cost of the electrical package, and both vary by state. A project connecting at HT carries switchgear and protection costs a similar LT project does not.

Ambient temperature affects thermal design and therefore both capital cost and achievable cycle life. Cooling that is adequate in a temperate climate may not hold cell temperature within its warranty band in an Indian summer.

Logistics matter more than they appear to. Battery shipments are dangerous goods, inland distance from a port is a real cost, and site access for container delivery is frequently the binding constraint on a compressed schedule.

Tax and duty treatment differ between an equipment supply contract and a turnkey works contract, which is one reason a like-for-like comparison must state whether GST is included.

Where sodium-ion fits

Sodium-ion avoids lithium feedstock exposure and behaves differently at temperature extremes, which is why Calyco is building on it. It is also less energy-dense per unit volume than a mature lithium chemistry, so the same energy occupies more space and needs more enclosure.

The honest position today is that the trade-off is project-specific: feedstock cost, footprint, ambient conditions, cycle requirement and warranty term all pull in different directions. Calyco publishes product performance figures only once they are engineering-verified, which is why unverified values appear as unstated rather than as estimates.

How to use the benchmark database

Start by fixing the scope you actually want to buy, then filter to that scope. Next fix the measurement basis — AC or DC, nominal or usable — and the tax treatment. Only then read the range.

Check the source type and the verification date on each record. An official tender price from this quarter and a modelled estimate from last year are both useful, but not equally.

Use the range to frame a budget and to challenge an offer that sits outside it. For a number you can build a business case on, size the system against your own load and site.
