Cost accumulates in a predictable order. Reading a BESS price without knowing where it sits on this ladder is the most common cause of a mismatched comparison.

    This is the raw commodity layer. Price tracks cell chemistry, cell format and global supply, and moves with lithium or sodium feedstock rather than with anything happening on site.

    The price unit changes rather than just the number. A service contract is priced by availability over time, so it is quoted per MW per month or per MWh throughput and cannot be compared with an equipment price per kWh.

Cost drivers

What moves a BESS price

Sixteen factors that change a quotation, what each one means, whether it pushes price up or down, what you need to supply before it can be priced, and whether the ranges above already reflect it.

    What it means

    The cell chemistry — sodium-ion, LFP, NMC or a flow chemistry — sets energy density, cycle life, temperature tolerance and safety engineering.

    Effect on price

    A chemistry with lower feedstock cost can reduce the cell price while increasing enclosure volume for the same energy, so the system price does not move in step with the cell price.

    Required cycle life, ambient temperature range, footprint constraints.

    Benchmarks record chemistry, and the chart can be filtered by it, so the ranges shown are chemistry-specific rather than blended.

    What it means

    Total energy and power of the installed system, which determines how fixed engineering, enclosure and connection costs are spread.

    Effect on price

    Price per kWh generally falls as size rises, because design, cooling, fire safety and HV equipment costs are not proportional to energy.

    Target energy in kWh or MWh, and power in kW or MW.

    Hours of discharge at rated power — a 2 MW / 4 MWh system is a 2-hour system. Duration sets the ratio of battery cost to conversion cost.

    Required discharge duration, or the load profile to size it from.

    Duration is recorded on each benchmark and is a filter, because comparing a 1-hour and a 4-hour system per kWh is misleading.

    What it means

    Location, altitude, ambient temperature, seismic and wind loading, access for heavy vehicles, and distance from the nearest substation.

    Effect on price

    Difficult access, high ambient temperature and long cable routes all add cost; a benign site adds nothing.

    Site address or coordinates, access constraints, distance to the connection point.

    Public benchmarks assume an unremarkable site. Site-specific cost is only established once the location is known.

    Air, liquid or hybrid thermal management. Cooling protects cycle life and sets the auxiliary energy the system consumes.

    How often the system is charged and discharged each day, which drives degradation and therefore the cell count needed to meet an end-of-life capacity.

    More cycles per day require oversizing or augmentation to hold capacity, raising cost per usable kWh over the term.

    Most published benchmarks assume one cycle per day. Higher cycling changes the sizing, not just the price.

How this data is collected and normalised

How sources are classified, how confidence is assigned, what is normalised and what is deliberately left alone.

The displayed segment ranges and aggregate counts come from the supplied Calyco Energy workbook. Company-level sources are still being normalised, so company and product comparisons remain unpublished.

Comparison limits

AC and DC package prices can differ materially. Equipment prices and capacity-charge tariffs are different commercial concepts, while nominal and usable capacity may also differ.

GST treatment is not consistently specified in the workbook. Inclusions, exclusions and final scope require engineering validation.

Data normalisation

Each record is stored exactly as its source published it. Capacity stays in the unit it was quoted in, and prices keep their original currency and price unit — nothing is rewritten on import.

What is normalised is notation, not magnitude: `kwh` becomes `kWh`, a lower-case currency code becomes its ISO form, and dates become ISO format. A number that arrives with a thousands separator, an embedded unit or an ambiguous date is rejected rather than guessed at.

When you filter by capacity, the filter bound is converted between kWh and MWh — an exact factor of 1 000 — and compared against records in their own units. The records themselves are never converted.

AC versus DC pricing

A DC-basis price covers the battery side only: cells, modules, racks, DC protection and, where applicable, the enclosure and its cooling.

An AC-basis price also covers power conversion, and usually the controls and protection needed to present power at an AC terminal.

The same physical battery therefore has two legitimate prices per kWh. Comparing a DC price with an AC price without saying so is the most common error in BESS price comparison, which is why every benchmark on this page carries its basis and why the basis is a filter.

Usable versus nominal capacity

Nominal (nameplate) capacity is the rated energy of the cells. Usable capacity is what the battery management system will actually deliver, after the depth-of-discharge limit and any reserve.
